Charlotte Mason set her method firmly on the power of narrative. This episode is the book discussion of a novel from 2001: Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. Miss Mason kept up with current literature and said “our novels are our teachers.” This beautiful, symbolic, realistic, and panoramic novel is an excellent teacher. Emily, Nicole, and Liz have a grand time unwrapping some aspects that reveal some of its wonders.

Thanks for this episode! It was a real treat to read this book. My 13 year old son devoured it as well and loved it. There was so much to talk about and the characters were so very real. I need to get another copy as I gave my original used one to my dad to read. It made me look up the geography of North Dakota; I learned things I never knew. Thank you for the recommendation.

As a native from eastern North Dakotan who is married to a Minnesotan, I was so excited to hear about this book! I haven’t read it yet but it’s on its way to my house. Can’t wait to read it!

Hey, I’ve never heard of this book club. How does all this work? The book list looks SO enticing!
Once a year we announce a book in our season opener (usually August/September) that we will read and then record a discussion in February. This is our third year. We also have a Parents’ Educational Course that is just a list of recommendations in Charlotte Mason’s categories for her Mothers’ Educational Course–which is self-paced and free. You can find that on our sidebar.
